Since the release of the Standards for the 21st-Century Learner by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) in 2007, the AASL committees and task forces have continued to develop supplementary online and print resources to assist teacher-librarians in understanding and implementing them. This article updates readers on the status of those initiatives, including correlations to the National Educational Technology Standards for Students and the Framework of the Partnership for 21st Century Skills, before turning its focus to the philosophy and major ideas behind the AASL Learning4Life (L4L) toolkit, including a focus on inquiry, the role of the teacher-librarian, the importance of flexible space, and the imperative to connect the AASL initiatives to existing local curricular practices.
